What's the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens?
Chemical sunscreens are formulated using a combination of organic chemicals that contain carbon, which act as UV filters. The active ingredients work by absorbing UV rays that hit the skin and converting them into heat, which is then released from the body. Mineral, or “physical” sunscreens use minerals such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide as their UV filter. Much of the information out there describes mineral sunscreens to work differently to chemical sunscreens, in that they reflect and scatter UV light. However, it’s important to note that this understanding comes from historical research when mineral particles were much larger. With new improvements in formulating mineral sunscreens (Micronized Zinc Technology) physical UV filters act in the same way as chemical UV filters, by absorbing UV light and converting them into heat.
What is Micronized Zinc Technology?
Micronized Zinc Technology is a modern practice in formulating mineral, or Zinc Oxide only sunscreens. The term "micronized" refers to the size of the Zinc Oxide particles used in your sunscreen. This technology allows for better UVA protection and unlike older mineral sunscreen formulas, rubs in clear on the skin.
What is the difference between Baby Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ and Sensitive Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+?
If you have sensitive skin, finding a sunscreen that doesn’t irritate your skin can be a hard task, so we’ve provided two options for our customers in hopes they find a product suitable for their skin. The biggest difference is that our Sensitive Sunscreen SPF 50+ uses chemical (organic) UV filters, whereas our Mineral SPF 50+ uses physical, or ‘mineral’ filters. Both are dermatologically tested, suitable for sensitive skin and for babies 6 months +. In the end, no one product is “better” or “healthier” than the other (despite what you may read on the internet). It all comes down to preference as to how each feels on the skin and how your skin may or may not react.
Is this product suitable for babies?
Yes, like all of our sunscreens, Mineral Sunscreen SPF50+ is suitable for all ages and babies over 6 months of age. As with all new products, we recommend starting with a small patch test. It is not recommended to apply sunscreen on babies under 6 months of age. Although of course if shade and clothing aren’t sufficient and you choose to introduce sunscreen. In this case both our Mineral SPF 50+ and our Sensitive Sunscreen SPF50+ will be safe.
